Gentle Giant Picture
Gentle Giantformed out of the blues based group Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, which featured the multi-instrumental Shulman brothers Derek, Ray, and Phil. They joined with guitarist Gary Green, keyboard player Kerry Minnear, and a series of drummers (John Weathers most consistently) to play music beyond the scope of ordinary rock, though with still a hint of blues in Green's guitar. Minnear's elaborate arrangements featured elements of both medieval polyphony and twentieth century composition. In particular, the complex four-part vocal arrangements give the band its unusual character, with each part functioning independently rather than forming simple harmonies. The instrumental parts were just as complex, often featuring interlocking parts often in odd meters, all backed by a solid drum pattern.

It's Not Imagination Lyrics

Gentle Giant

Looked in the papers, looked in the magazines
Wanted to find out, to know
Was there an answer, was there really something
Hidden beneath them below
Searched in the light and underneath the pictures
Something was written there
And through the smiles and under all the color
A message on everything there
But it's not imagination
It's not imagination
It's not imagination
It's not me, look and see for yourself
Didn't believe it, although I saw myself
Wanted to look there again,
But it was real and everybody saw it
When it was shown, pointed out to them
S.e.xisting, s.e.x.exciting
Written where it doesn't show
What do we see, the product or the message
So hard to tell I don't know
But it's not imagination
It's not imagination
It's not imagination
It's not me, can't you see for yourself
(Solo)
But it's not imagination
It's not imagination
It's not imagination
It's not me, can't you see for yourself
That's... All... There... Is....
