Gentle Giant Picture
Gentle Giantformed out of the blues based group Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, which featured the multi-instrumental Shulman brothers Derek, Ray, and Phil. They joined with guitarist Gary Green, keyboard player Kerry Minnear, and a series of drummers (John Weathers most consistently) to play music beyond the scope of ordinary rock, though with still a hint of blues in Green's guitar. Minnear's elaborate arrangements featured elements of both medieval polyphony and twentieth century composition. In particular, the complex four-part vocal arrangements give the band its unusual character, with each part functioning independently rather than forming simple harmonies. The instrumental parts were just as complex, often featuring interlocking parts often in odd meters, all backed by a solid drum pattern.

Heroes No More Lyrics

Gentle Giant

They were standing there - they were so near, yet so far away
Were they so unreal?Just a dream of someone to be one day?
There was endless fame. They were heroes, now they're souvenirs
And through changing years I can still remember - no quite so clear
Heroes no more -
Stay with me still
I dream.I hope.I always will.
Now they're mine no more as they stand there in the glowing light
I see every face like my own, but that was another night
Now they're just a dream of the time known ever left to fall
Soon the game begins, but those heroes yours always to recall
Heroes no more -
Stay with me still
I dream.I hope.I always will.
Heroes no more -
Stay with me still
I dream.I hope.I always will.
They were standing there - they were so near, yet so far away
Were they so unreal?Just a dream of someone to be one day?
There was endless fame. They were heroes, now they're souvenirs
And through changing years I can still remember - no quite so clear
